An important Austrian terracotta chimney piece, Weinerberger Ziegelfabriks, by J. Fritsch.

Thanks to the research of the journalist Olga Kronsteiner who recently published an article about the chimney piece in the Austrian daily Der Standard, some new elements have been discovered. The chimney piece has been drawn by the General Intendant of Buildings Friederich Schmidt and was probably planned to be displayed in the reception room of the new Vienna city hall who started to be built in 1872 on the Paradeplatz. The chimney piece has been realized in terra cotta in 1878 by Weinerberger Ziegelfabriks, factory specialized in the production of ceramics objets in Inzersdorf. A watercolour drawing curated in the Wien Museum shows the project of the chimney piece totally completed with its polychrome decoration (inv. Na. 157.175/354) as i twas published to be exhibited to the Universal Exhibition in 1878 in Paris to boast the skills of the fabric.
